"The Life and Work of Mother Teresa"

**

« In this age of progress, everyone is in a hurry, no one has time, and the unfortunates who can't compete fall apart. These are the people we want to love, serve and surround. »

Mother Teresa radiated joy and confidence, she urged to love people who suffered from loneliness. But she herself lived for several decades in a night of faith that manifested itself in the feeling of losing God, aridity in prayer, and spiritual dryness (she sought God, and He did not respond to her. She must act as if He did not exist)..
She had accepted the defeat of joy and gentleness, but every morning she felt the weight of her inner night and the hope that had fled. For her, without the presence of God, everything was desolate.

📗  Sometimes, getting up meant overcoming the insurmountable. Her only relief was self-forgetfulness. God, she said, is there, even if we don't feel Him. For she never, at any time, doubted God's existence.
Her smile became more than an effort, a strain, a mask, a last bulwark against despair. She was torn in endless agony, with on one side a broken soul, ice in her heart, and on the other words of fervor, a loving smile, an unfailing devotion.

« They say that God lives in me, yet the reality of darkness, coldness, emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul...
Sisters and people think that my faith, my intimacy with God, fills my being and my heart. If they only knew ! My good humour is just a cloak to hide my emptiness and sadness.
 »

This ordeal, always kept secret, brought her even closer to those deprived of tenderness and the support of faith. She had to know, in her soul, the feeling of abandonment of the poor, the rejected, the lost, the helpless.

Agnes Bojaxhiu left Alabania at the age of 18 to join the convent of Notre Dame de Lorette in Bengal. She taught children there for 17 years, but then suddenly an inner call came to her to tear herself away from this cosy life and go out into the streets of Calcutta, to meet the most destitute.

Journalists worked with her for many years. They testify and cite those who were so fascinated by her life that they abandoned everything to follow her, « living example of the power of self-sacrifice and love, a model in these times of egoism. »
